Troubleshoot Before Calling Your Garbage Disposal Service Technician
If your garbage disposal makes a buzzing sound when you turn it on, turn it off quickly. Just because your garbage disposal is stuck doesn't mean you need to buy a new one. Use your hex wrench that initially came with your disposal, insert it into the recess hole located at the bottom of your garbage disposal, and turn it back and forth until you loosen what has caused it to jam. Since most of us no longer have the original hex wrench, an allen wrench works fine. In many cases, it's a large seed, screw, bone, or bottle cap that made its way into our disposal; whatever the case, the object needs removing.
Simple Garbage Disposal Tips
Once your disposal moves freely, turn off the electricity from the power box and unplug the unit double check to make sure no power is going to the disposal before clearing the object. Consider using a wet and dry vacuum, salad tongs and in some cases, a magnet to remove what's inside the sink. When the project is complete, pour a cup of baking soda down the drain, add two cups of vinegar. Let sit for 10 minutes then pour hot water down it and “Wala!”, your drain is clean. If your disposal is cleared and all electricity has been restored then rest the electrical connection by pushing the red reset button at the bottom of your disposal. The reset button is a circuit breaker within the unit and when on overload, it will trip. Hopefully, these tips will save you a service call.
